And then one day I suddenly realized how pleasant it was to relax, even if only for a few short moments.
So I began to have the desire to bring that feeling to others through my paintings in general, and through Tarot in particular. Because Tarot is a tool on the journey of self-discovery, and being able to relax and bring yourself to a state of balance also helps to clarify the thoughts in your heart.
The process of tracing the sketch onto watercolor paper
The spirit of the deck revolves around some key words such as: “feeling of relaxation”, “continuity”, “endlessness”… The content is drawn from my personal experience and perspective in the process of learning about Tarot in particular, and knowledge related to mental development in general over the past 7 years (since 2017).
Hand-drawn idea sketches and notes in the notebook
All the pictures are painted in watercolor, then scanned and post-processed on the computer. In each card, I try to tell a story-in-picture, combined with calculating the layout to be tight. Each element in the Minor Arcana has its own main color scheme and character system.
- Suit of Fire: The main colors are red, orange, brown… All main characters have blonde hair. Animals will include firebirds and foxes. The setting is associated with rocky mountains and forests.
- Suit of Water: The main colors are blue, sky blue… All main characters have white hair. Animals will be aquatic species. The setting is also associated with water, seas and oceans.
- Suit of Air: The main colors are blue-gray, purple… All main characters have black hair. Animals will be different species of birds, with images of feathers. The setting is associated with the sky and vast spaces.
- Suit of Earth: The main color is green. All main characters have brown hair. Animals include deer. The setting is associated with trees, flowers, grass, and mountains.

Although the basic content of OCEAN FROM THE SKY is still based on the Rider Waite Smith standard, the author’s personal perspective is embedded quite a lot, so the deck will be more suitable for those who have experience learning about Tarot than beginners.
I hope that when looking at my tarot deck, everyone will feel comfortable and peaceful.
Explanation of the project’s name
The name “OCEAN FROM THE SKY” was chosen to evoke the image of an endless blue space, mysterious and profound like the ocean in the sky, which can contain all our worries. Letting ourselves into that space, the pressures and tensions that are accumulating will be soothed, embraced, and then gradually transformed so that our hearts become lighter and more peaceful.

- Natsumi’s real name is Ha Huynh Huong, born in 1996, graduated from the Graphic Design Department – Graphic Design Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts.
- Natsumi started learning about Tarot and Psychological Astrology in 2017. Choosing Tarot as her graduation project came from the desire to do a different project from her predecessors, to challenge herself in drawing and based on an existing hobby.
- Currently, Natsumi is a freelance illustrator with watercolor as her main medium, living and working in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides Ocean From The Sky Tarot, Natsumi is also known for her cute and clear food illustrations ( link ).
- Besides drawing, you also have a hobby of learning foreign languages, exploring new knowledge, or spending free time sitting alone and writing in a journal.
- Natsumi feels a special connection to the image of the sea under a deep blue sky in the summer, and that is why you chose the name Natsumi (夏海) – formed from the two Kanji characters “Hạ” (summer) and “Hải” (sea), meaning “Summer Sea” – as your artistic pseudonym.
Ocean From The Sky Tarot is Natsumi’s graduation project in 2023, directly supervised by Master Phan Vu Linh, achieving a near-perfect score of 9.75/10, and is kept on display at the museum of Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts.

The process of bringing Natsumi’s ideas to life
“In the early stages of the project, I spent about 5-6 months reading more materials, taking notes on key points, keywords, and sketching out ideas in a notebook. If I sketched outside, I would also take that sketch and paste it into the notebook for easy synthesis later.
Some paintings have final versions that are almost identical to the original idea, while others have ideas that I change halfway through.”
I really like the crossed arms symbol of the Two of Swords in the Rider Waite Smith deck, so I tried to incorporate that image here – the ice the character is standing on.
The final version changed the position of the older brother to make the layout more balanced. When trimming the pencil, I tried to draw all 47 strings, but when it came to using a pen to draw the lines, I had to… give up.
At first, I considered designing a guitar with intricate carved patterns, even adding effects like those in fantasy films, but I realized there wasn’t enough time, so I had to simplify it.
I deeply appreciate the saying “Pleasure can be based on illusion, but happiness must be based on truth” by Sakurai Sho, and that was also the idea behind creating this artwork.
