Limebócx brings traditional music into the modern era in “Dung Hoa”
After successful crowdfunding on Comicola with the 3rd MV Project, Limebócx released the MV "Dung Hoa".
VTV.vn – “Dung Hoa” marks the return of the two-member band Limebócx with the idea of combining traditional Vietnamese music with modern materials.
Limebócx is a 2-member band: Chuoi (vocals/zither/bass) and Do Tung (guitar/electronics). Both are prominent figures in the underground music scene and have participated in many different groups and music projects, most notably Go Lim and Bluemato. Since the group was founded in August 2018, Limebócx has continued to realize the idea of combining traditional Vietnamese music such as ca tru and hat xam with modern materials such as electronic music, hip hop, and beatbox.
With the desire to express music in the most natural way possible, both members always try to combine traditional and modern elements in the most diverse way, not bound by any musical genre or rule. The sounds of ca tru, xam, quan ho, etc. are flexibly transformed, making listeners feel the familiarity of folk elements but at the same time parallel to that is the modernity and innovation in the melody and structure of the songs.
After 5 years of operation, Limebócx has released the EP Electrùnic consisting of 4 songs, with lyrics inspired by folk songs and poems by Nguyen Khuyen. Dung Hoa marks the band's return with compositions with lyrics inspired by the stories of member Chuoi from the perspective of a witness to the passing of friends and relatives.
“Dung Hoa is a play on 'Hoa Rung', I wanted to metaphorically describe the loss of a person,” Chuoi shared about the new song, “Before that, I was very hesitant about what to name it because I didn't want to mention it in a too obvious way, maybe like Vietnamese people find many ways to downplay this. Moreover, this is also my personal story, I wanted to tell it but was conflicted because I didn't want the language to be too heavy.”
Although it deals with the pain of losing loved ones and friends, Limebócx’s music is not heavy. The melody and lyrics of the song still show acceptance of reality and also wishes for loved ones in the afterlife.
On the background of neat and solid beatbox, Chuoi's voice changes flexibly in the sentences, soft then strong and passionate. In addition, the prominent sound of the zither in Limebócx's music is once again a highlight in this song. Originally representing Vietnamese folk music and culture, the zither in the song Dung Hoa is intelligently arranged to harmonize with the sound of modern instruments, while still expressing the true spirit of the song.
The poignancy in Dung Hoa was also excellently portrayed through My Huong's violin, helping to push the story to its climax. The highlight of that climax was Tung's guitar, which more clearly portrayed the narrator's pain.
MV Dung Hoa was directed by Marilyn Pham Dacusin - a young director/cinematographer - who has participated in directing and producing many visual products of independent artists and bands such as: Ho Tram Anh, Nhung Dua Tre, Bluemato.
This new song Dung Hoa can be considered the introduction to interesting things that the audience can look forward to and expect from the band Limebócx.
