Restoration is the latest passionate project from the Ngũ Hành Games team. It places players in the role of reputable construction companies managing skilled artisans during the restoration of the Kien Trung Palace in the Imperial City of Hue—a historic architectural masterpiece of the Nguyen Dynasty.
In this game, you do not wield swords or spears; instead, you wield blueprints, rulers, and mobilize a workforce of diverse craftsmen. Every move is a brick laid to preserve culture; every decision affects the success of the entire project.
Restoration offers a perfect balance between strategic thinking and cultural storytelling, challenging players to calculate, manage resources, and optimize their strategies. It harmoniously combines famous tactical mechanisms such as Worker Placement, Area Control, Rondel, and Ability Unlocking to create the first Euro-style strategy board game in Vietnam.
This project is not just a game; it is the result of 5 years of effort by Ngũ Hành Games to deliver a board game capable of conquering not only veteran Vietnamese gamers but also international markets.
This project represents a step out of the “safe zone” with the dream of affirming that Vietnam’s creativity and cultural potential are second to none. Thereby helping the board game community in Vietnam develop and creating a foundation for more high-quality products for the Vietnamese high-strategy board game community.
2020: The Idea Sparks
If you’re a veteran board game player, you’ll always be looking forward to highly strategic games that allow players to think and plan. Following requests from the community, Ngũ Hành Games began planning a high-strategy board game that could change how the Vietnamese and global markets view local board games.
2021: Covid & Endless Development
The origins of Restoration began as a light strategy game, with simple systems combined. At that time, Ngu Hanh only had two years of experience in board game design, something almost impossible to learn professionally in Vietnam, resulting in very naive and simple early versions. The project almost came to a halt at this point due to the unexpected appearance of Covid.
2022: Failure Due to Lack of Capability
At that time, Restoration was still called Chu Đậu and remained a light strategy game primarily for family and friends. Due to safety concerns and the young team’s reluctance to take risks, Restoration was discontinued because the production capabilities and market conditions at that time were not suitable for its to continue.
2023-2024: Kien Trung Palace Inauguration & The Return
In 2023, witnessing the restoration of Kien Trung Palace in Hue reignited the project. At this moment, the idea of restarting the project emerged. Everyone began the process of editing, developing the art, and researching Kien Trung Palace to create a new product that was more relevant to the modern era.
By late 2024, the Restoration was almost complete and introduced, much to the delight and anticipation of many playtesters. However, the team faced numerous difficulties in producing this product due to the large number of complex components and the high technical quality requirements that Vietnamese manufacturers could not meet. Furthermore, manufacturing in China and importing would increase costs, making it impossible to offer a competitive price in Vietnam.
2025: Courage, Destruction & A Turning Point
In 2025, Ngũ Hành refused to let production issues hinder the launch of a good product that had accumulated community support. The R&D team made the bravest decision ever for Ngũ Hành: demolishing 70% of what had been built, retaining only 30% of the game’s spirit and strategic depth to create a better, more streamlined, and, most importantly, higher-quality version in terms of both components and content. This demolition eliminated many unnecessary small elements, paving the way for the development team to create more sophisticated, high-quality components, ensuring the best customer experience without increasing the product price. And today, as you read this, you have already touched one of Ngũ Hành’s most outstanding creations.

Restoration is the 10th work from Ngu Hanh Games, a studio specializing in designing and creating board games with Vietnamese cultural themes. With over 5 years and 10 product lines in various countries, Ngu Hanh Games is the first pioneering company in Vietnam to offer Vietnamese cultural board games internationally. - Publishing field: Co-author of “Around the World of Board Games,” published by Hoa Hoc Tro magazine, introducing global board game culture to Vietnamese readers.
- Education & Orientation: Guest speaker at RMIT University’s board game design course, inspiring a new generation of designers.
- Community building: Co-founder of Hóng hớt board game, the most vibrant board game community on Facebook in Vietnam, connecting and nurturing the creativity of board game enthusiasts.
